Simply Weigh - Getting Started

Well, here we are, up and running as the new eco living / refill shop in Hailsham. It has been a little while in the development and is an odd time to open. I ended a role in fundraising at a local animal charity, having been in charity fundraising for over 20 years, and decided it was a good time to try something different.

While I am not an eco-warrior, I am concerned about the environment I live in and the amount of plastic and food stuffs that go to waste. Having been following a few zero-waste stores and listening to the beloved Sir David Attenborough, I decided it was time for me to “make a difference – one small step at a time” and to help others do the same thing along the way.

Simply Weigh had started its journey to where we are today. A shop unit was available in St Mary’s Walk in Hailsham and, having lived in the town for over 35 years, it felt like the right place to take on. A rummage through Facebook and I found some lovely ex-display units that were just what I was looking for. A few recycled food dispensers and a lot of jars later the shop was looking good. A lick of paint and some nice new lights and we were there.

Next was what to chose to fill the shop. I knew I want to support local as well as offering organic and non – organic foods and helping with Gluten – Free and Vegan, so a good place to start. I linked up with Infinity Foods based in Brighton and the shopping just went from there. The delivery man said he had not delivered quite so many different herbs and spices before.

The temptation to try some confectionary was too great so I ordered a few different things, from vegan friendly fudge and gummies to chocolate coved ginger pieces and a range of chocolate nuts and raisins.

We have ended up with a good verity of dry food stuffs, eco washing liquid, Faith In Nature bathroom products, chocolates and teas & coffees. And finally, I should not forget the wonderful Peanut Butter machine that grinds fresh peanuts to the texture you want -some say it’s the best Peanut Butter they have tasted.

Despite the strange year and the Covid-19 restrictions, we are here and looking forward to opening in the New Year when you will be able to visit in person or call us to order and collect or use our website to order online and then safely collect your goods.
